Weight Management on the Gold Coast

01The approach

A Clinical Assessment, Not a Program in a Box

Weight is a clinical measurement with a lot of inputs behind it, including thyroid function, medications, sleep, mental health and a range of metabolic factors. At Nuevo Medical, weight management on the Gold Coast starts with a GP assessment of those inputs rather than with a plan. What follows depends on what that assessment finds, and it varies considerably between patients. Our dietitians and exercise physiologists work in the same centre, so where nutrition or supervised exercise forms part of the picture, it's arranged here. Where a structured program is appropriate, our weight management program runs from the rehabilitation facility. Call 0417 426 825 to enquire.

02The assessment

What the Initial Assessment Covers

The first consultation is an assessment rather than the start of an intervention, and it covers several areas.

  • 01

    Medical history

Conditions and medications that affect weight, including thyroid, hormonal and metabolic factors. Some commonly prescribed medications influence weight as a side effect.

  • 02

    Pathology

Bloods to review thyroid function, glucose, lipids and liver function where indicated. Collection is available onsite through our pathology partner.

  • 03

    Dietary review

A dietitian assessment of current intake, eating patterns and any previous approaches tried. This is a clinical review rather than a meal plan.

  • 04

    Activity and function

An exercise physiologist assessment of current activity, mobility and any physical limitations. This informs what supervised exercise is appropriate, if any.

03The process

How the Consultation Process Works

The first appointment is a longer consultation because it covers a broad history. Your GP will ask about weight over time rather than at a single point, previous approaches and how they went, current medications, sleep, mood and any conditions already diagnosed. They'll take measurements and order pathology where it's relevant. Bringing a list of current medications and supplements, and any previous blood test results, gives your GP more to work with. A second appointment reviews the results and discusses what the assessment found. From there, your GP will explain which options are clinically appropriate in your situation and what each would involve, including whether dietetic or exercise physiology input is recommended. Any medication is discussed individually in consultation and cannot be described on a public website.

FAQs

It means weight is assessed and managed by a medical practitioner with access to pathology, examination and other clinical information, rather than through a commercial program. What that involves in practice varies according to what the assessment finds.

Several treatable conditions affect weight, including thyroid disorders and some metabolic conditions, and these are identified through pathology rather than examination. Testing also establishes a baseline for factors such as glucose and lipids.

Yes, and it's common for both to contribute where nutrition and physical activity are each relevant. At Nuevo Medical both practitioner types work within the same centre as the referring GP.
