Exercise Physiology on the Gold Coast

01The discipline

Prescribed Exercise, Not General Training

Exercise physiology is the clinical prescription of exercise for people managing a medical condition, which makes it a different discipline from personal training despite the surface similarity. At Nuevo Medical, exercise physiology on the Gold Coast is delivered by accredited practitioners in a Technogym-equipped rehabilitation facility inside our Bundall centre. Sessions are supervised and the prescription is written against the referring practitioner's management plan, with precautions built in. Because the GP or cardiologist who made the referral works in the same building, progress reporting is direct rather than posted. Structured blocks run through our health programs. Call 0417 426 825 to enquire.

02Who it's for

Who Exercise Physiology Is For

Referrals come from a range of clinical situations rather than one.

  • 01

    Cardiac conditions

Supervised exercise following a cardiac event or as part of ongoing management. Prescription follows the precautions set by the treating cardiologist.

  • 02

    Metabolic conditions

Structured exercise as a component of managing diabetes or clustered metabolic risk factors. This is coordinated with dietetic input where both are involved.

  • 03

    Deconditioning

Rebuilding capacity after illness, hospitalisation or an extended inactive period. Programs begin from tested current capacity rather than an assumed baseline.

  • 04

    Musculoskeletal and chronic pain

Graded activity where movement has become limited. This frequently runs alongside physiotherapy rather than instead of it.

03The assessment

How an Initial Assessment Works

The first appointment is an assessment rather than a training session. Your exercise physiologist reviews the referral, the management plan and any precautions specified by the referring practitioner, then takes a history covering your conditions, medications, previous activity and any symptoms that limit you. Physical testing follows, measuring strength, range of movement, balance and endurance relevant to what's being addressed. Bringing operation reports, specialist letters or imaging where they exist means the assessment works from actual clinical detail. From those measurements, your practitioner sets out a proposed structure covering session frequency, what each will involve and what will be measured at review. The same tests are repeated at intervals, and findings are reported back to the referring practitioner.

04Questions

FAQs

An accredited exercise physiologist holds a university qualification in clinical exercise prescription and works with people managing medical conditions, generally under referral. A personal trainer holds a fitness industry qualification and works with general fitness rather than clinical populations.

A referral isn't needed to book privately, though one is required for Medicare and certain funding arrangements. A referral also communicates any clinical precautions that apply.

Progress is tracked by repeating the physical measurements taken at the initial assessment at set intervals. Those results inform whether the prescription is adjusted.
