Hypertension on the Gold Coast

01The approach

Blood Pressure and Lipids Reviewed Together

Raised blood pressure and abnormal lipids turn up in the same patient often enough that reviewing them separately misses part of the picture. At Nuevo Medical, hypertension on the Gold Coast is assessed alongside lipid abnormalities by our cardiologists, working with your GP rather than in place of them. Blood pressure is established across multiple readings rather than one clinic measurement, and lipids are tracked through onsite pathology collection. Where the assessment identifies a broader pattern of metabolic risk, that's addressed through metabolic syndrome review. Medication decisions rest with your treating practitioner and are discussed in consultation. Call 0417 426 825 to enquire.

02How it's measured

How Both Are Measured and Monitored

Establishing a reliable picture takes repeated measurement rather than a single visit.

  • 01

    Clinic readings

Blood pressure measured under standard conditions across separate occasions. A single raised reading in a clinical setting is not sufficient to establish a diagnosis.

  • 02

    Home monitoring

Readings recorded at home over a set period, using a validated monitor. Your practitioner will explain the recording schedule and how to interpret what you're seeing.

  • 03

    Ambulatory monitoring

Automated readings recorded over 24 hours where clinically indicated. This captures overnight and daytime patterns a clinic reading can't.

  • 04

    Lipid testing

Repeat pathology at intervals set by your practitioner. Trends across several results carry more information than any single profile.

03The review

Reviewing Contributing Factors and Medication

A consultation for raised blood pressure looks well beyond the reading itself. Your cardiologist will review your medication list in full, including over-the-counter products and supplements, as several affect blood pressure. They'll ask about salt intake, alcohol, sleep, snoring, activity and stress, and take a family history. Examination and pathology check for conditions that can cause or contribute to raised readings, since a proportion of hypertension has an identifiable underlying cause worth investigating. Bringing a record of home readings, ideally over a couple of weeks, gives your practitioner far more to work with than a single clinic measurement. Where medication is already being taken, the review covers whether the current regimen remains appropriate, and any change is discussed with you before it's made.

04Questions

FAQs

It's the term for an abnormal balance of lipids in the blood, which may involve raised LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, raised triglycerides or a combination. It's identified through a blood test rather than symptoms.

Blood pressure varies through the day and is often elevated in clinical settings, so a single reading can be misleading. Guidelines rely on repeated measurements, and often home or ambulatory monitoring, before a diagnosis is made.

Intervals depend on the readings, existing conditions and whether treatment has recently changed, so a treating practitioner sets them individually. There is no universal schedule.
