Detailed Imaging Without Radiation
An MRI scan uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves rather than radiation, which makes it particularly useful for soft tissue, joints, the spine and the brain. At Nuevo Medical, MRI scans on the Gold Coast will be provided by Imaging Specialists within our Bundall centre, in a dedicated radiology suite within the building. Having imaging in the same place as the referring practitioner shortens the gap between the request and the scan, and between the scan and the consultation that discusses it. Where a different modality is more appropriate, a CT scan may be arranged instead. Call 0417 426 825 to enquire.

What MRI Is Commonly Used For
Referrals for MRI tend to concentrate in particular clinical areas.

Musculoskeletal imaging
Joints, ligaments, tendons and cartilage, which MRI shows in considerably more detail than X-ray. Knee, shoulder and spine referrals are among the most common.

Spinal imaging
Assessment of discs, nerve roots and the spinal cord. The absence of radiation is one reason MRI is often preferred for spinal questions.

Neurological imaging
Assessment of the brain where a specific clinical question has been raised. What the scan is looking for is set out in the referral.

Abdominal and pelvic imaging
Selected investigations where soft tissue detail is required. The choice between MRI and other modalities depends on the question being asked.
03Safety screening
Safety Screening Before an MRI
MRI involves a powerful magnet, which is why the screening process beforehand is more detailed than for other scans. You'll be asked about implanted devices including pacemakers and defibrillators, surgical clips, joint replacements, cochlear implants, and any history of metal fragments in the eyes or elsewhere from previous injury or occupational exposure. Some of these are compatible with MRI and some aren't, so the questions are asked precisely rather than generally. Bringing documentation about any implanted device, including the manufacturer's card if you have one, allows the radiology team to confirm compatibility. Metal objects and some cosmetics need to be removed before entering the scan room. The scanner is noisy, hearing protection is provided, and the scan takes longer than a CT or X-ray.
