Healthy Ageing Program on the Gold Coast

01The program

Maintaining Function Into Later Life

Strength, balance and functional capacity all change with age, and they're measurable, which means they can be tracked rather than assumed. Our healthy ageing program on the Gold Coast runs at Nuevo Medical for older adults, combining supervised exercise and periodic clinical measurement in our Bundall facility. The program works from testing rather than a general older-adult routine, since capacity varies enormously between people of the same age. Where preventative clinical review is also relevant, that continues through our preventative care program and your GP. Call 0417 426 825 to enquire.

02The focus

What the Program Focuses On

Several distinct areas are assessed and addressed.

  • 01

    Balance

Tested using standardised measures rather than observation. Balance is assessed separately from strength as the two can differ considerably.

  • 02

    Muscular strength

Resistance work for the muscle groups relevant to everyday function. Testing identifies which these are for you specifically.

  • 03

    Functional movement

Everyday tasks such as rising from a chair, stairs and carrying. These are tested directly rather than inferred from other measures.

  • 04

    Ongoing monitoring

Measurements repeated at intervals and reported to your GP. Gradual change is difficult to notice without a documented comparison.

03Assessment

How Assessment Accounts for Existing Conditions

Older adults frequently have several conditions and take multiple medications, and both affect what exercise is appropriate, so the assessment covers them in detail. Your exercise physiologist reviews the referral and management plan, then takes a history covering all current conditions, every medication including those prescribed elsewhere, previous falls, joint replacements or surgery, and any symptoms that limit activity. Bringing a complete medication list and details of any joint surgery is genuinely important here, as several medications affect balance and blood pressure during exertion. Physical testing follows within any precautions specified. Your practitioner then explains the proposed structure and what will be measured at review. Results are reported to your GP, who retains clinical oversight throughout.

04Questions

FAQs

Balance and strength are distinct capacities and can change independently of one another, so assessing only one leaves a gap. Both are measured using standardised tests.

Not necessarily, though they shape what's prescribed and what precautions apply. A referring practitioner and the assessing exercise physiologist determine what's appropriate individually.

A number of commonly prescribed medications affect balance, heart rate or blood pressure during exertion, which is relevant to how exercise is prescribed and monitored. A complete list including items prescribed elsewhere is needed.
