Preconception care is the review that takes place before trying to conceive rather than after, and it exists because several of the relevant considerations are easier to address in advance. What the Consultation Reviews
A preconception appointment works through a defined checklist of considerations.

All current medications and supplements are reviewed for pregnancy considerations. Some require discussion or adjustment well ahead of conception rather than at the point of a positive test.

Immunity status for several conditions is checked through pathology where records are unavailable. Some vaccinations are given before rather than during pregnancy.

Review of any diagnosed conditions and how they're currently managed. Conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disorders are commonly reviewed in this context.

History taken from both partners where applicable. This informs whether any further discussion or referral is appropriate.
03Timing
Timing the Appointment and What to Bring
There's a practical reason this consultation is best arranged some months before trying to conceive rather than in the same month. Several of the items reviewed, including vaccination and certain medication changes, require lead time before they're complete. Your practitioner will take a full history from both partners where applicable, covering medical conditions, medications, supplements, previous pregnancies, family history and lifestyle factors. Bringing a complete list of everything you take, including over-the-counter products and supplements, along with any vaccination records you have, makes the review more accurate and reduces unnecessary testing. Pathology is arranged where records can't confirm immunity or where a condition needs assessing. Results are reviewed at a follow-up appointment.
