The Components of a Lipid Profile
A standard profile reports several measurements, each interpreted alongside the others.

Total cholesterol
The overall measurement, which on its own tells you relatively little. It's reported alongside the fractions that make it up.

LDL cholesterol
Frequently the measurement clinical decisions centre on. Target ranges differ depending on individual risk rather than applying uniformly.

HDL cholesterol
Reported separately, and interpreted differently from LDL. The ratio between fractions is often more informative than any single figure.

Triglycerides
A separate lipid measurement, and one of the more affected by recent food intake. This is a common reason fasting is requested.
03Preparation
Fasting Requirements and Result Interpretation
Whether you need to fast depends on which tests have been requested and the reason for them, so follow the instruction issued with your pathology request rather than a general rule. Where fasting is required, the period is specified and water is usually permitted. It's worth telling the collection staff if you have inadvertently eaten, since a note on the request affects how the result is interpreted. Your practitioner will review the results alongside your blood pressure, glucose, family history and other risk factors rather than in isolation, and against previous results where they exist. Bringing older lipid results to the consultation, including any arranged elsewhere, allows the trend to be assessed. Results are discussed at a consultation rather than issued without explanation.
