Pain Management on the Gold Coast
01The approach
When Pain and Inactivity Feed Each Other
Persistent pain and reduced activity tend to travel together, and separating cause from effect is part of the clinical work. At Nuevo Medical, pain management on the Gold Coast begins with a GP assessment covering what's driving the pain, what investigation has already been done and how much movement has been lost along the way. Our exercise physiologists and physiotherapists work in the same centre, so where graded activity forms part of the approach, it's supervised rather than self-directed. Imaging is available onsite where it's clinically indicated. Some patients also work through our return to activity program. Call 0417 426 825 to enquire.
02What's assessed
What the Assessment Considers
A pain assessment looks well beyond the site of the symptom itself.
- 01
Pain history
When it started, what changes it and what has already been tried. Patterns over time often carry more information than a description of a single bad day.
- 02
Previous investigation
Imaging, pathology and specialist opinions already obtained. Repeating investigations that have already been done rarely adds anything.
- 03
Functional impact
What movement, work or activity has become difficult. This is measured rather than estimated, since it sets the starting point for any supervised exercise.
- 04
Medication review
What's currently being taken, including over-the-counter analgesia. Your GP will review this as part of the overall picture.
03Measurement
How Deconditioning Is Measured and Reassessed
Deconditioning is the loss of physical capacity that follows a period of reduced activity, and it's assessed through measurement rather than description. An exercise physiologist will test relevant strength, range of movement, balance and endurance to establish where you're currently at. That baseline matters, because a program written against an assumed starting point tends to be either too demanding or pointless. Your GP will have specified any precautions or restrictions, and these are built into what's prescribed. Sessions are supervised in our rehabilitation facility, and the same measurements are repeated at set intervals so the practitioner can see what has changed and adjust the prescription. Findings are reported back to your referring GP rather than kept within the allied health team.
04Questions
FAQs
It refers to the loss of strength, endurance, flexibility or balance that follows a period of reduced physical activity, whether from illness, injury, hospitalisation or extended inactivity. It's assessed through physical testing rather than by how someone feels.
Imaging is useful when the clinical assessment raises a specific question it can answer, and less useful as a general search. A GP decides based on the history and examination findings rather than on the duration of symptoms alone.
That's a clinical question rather than a general rule, and the answer depends on what is causing the pain. Any supervised exercise is prescribed against the precautions the treating practitioner has specified.
