01The approach
Establishing a Clinical Picture First
Fertility assessment is the process of establishing what's actually known before any decision about treatment gets made. At Nuevo Medical, fertility assessment on the Gold Coast covers history, examination and appropriate investigation for individuals and couples, with pathology collection and ultrasound available in our Bundall centre. We should be clear about scope: we don't provide fertility treatment or assisted reproductive procedures. Where treatment is the appropriate next step, we refer to an external service, and having a complete assessment already done means that referral starts from a better position. 02What's covered
What an Assessment Covers
Assessment considers both partners where applicable, since contributing factors are common on either side.

Medical and reproductive history
Cycle patterns, previous pregnancies, surgical history, medications and existing conditions. This directs which investigations are worth arranging.

Pathology
Hormonal and general blood tests, with the specific panel depending on the history. Collection is available onsite through our pathology partner.

Ultrasound
Pelvic imaging where clinically indicated, available within the centre. The findings are interpreted alongside the pathology rather than separately.

Male factor investigation
Assessment and testing where applicable, arranged through appropriate pathways. Investigation of both partners is standard practice rather than exceptional.
03In the room
What the First Consultation Involves
The initial appointment is longer than a standard consultation because the history is detailed and covers ground people don't always expect. Your practitioner will ask about cycle length and regularity, how long you've been trying to conceive, previous pregnancies or losses, contraception history, surgical history, medications, supplements and any existing conditions in both partners. Bringing previous test results, particularly earlier hormonal bloods or imaging, and a record of cycle dates where you have one, makes the assessment more complete from the outset. Examination and investigation follow. At a review appointment, your practitioner explains what the results show, what remains unclear and what the reasonable next steps are, including whether referral to a fertility service is appropriate.

Australian guidance generally suggests assessment after a defined period of trying to conceive without success, with that period shorter where age or a known condition is a factor. A GP will advise on what applies individually.
Yes, where both partners are involved, because contributing factors occur on either side with similar frequency. Assessing only one partner leaves a substantial part of the picture unexamined.
No. Assessment establishes what is and isn't known, and the findings inform what options are reasonable, which may or may not include treatment. That discussion follows the results rather than preceding them.
