The Administrative Half of Getting Seen
A referral is easy to write and surprisingly easy to lose. Between the consultation and the specialist appointment sits a stack of administrative work: getting the imaging done first, chasing the pathology, making sure the specialist actually receives the history. At Nuevo Medical, specialist referrals on the Gold Coast are coordinated by our team rather than handed over as a task for the patient. Where the specialty is available in our building, such as cardiology, that's straightforward. Where it isn't, we maintain relationships with external specialists across psychiatry, endocrinology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology and other fields. What Coordination Actually Involves
Coordination is a set of practical steps rather than a single action.

Sequencing investigations
Arranging imaging and pathology in the order the specialist will need them. A consultation without the relevant results often becomes two consultations.

Preparing the referral
Ensuring the letter carries the relevant history, medications and results rather than a summary line. Specialists work from what they're sent.

Booking and follow-up
Confirming the appointment is made and tracking whether it happened. Referrals that go unbooked are one of the more common failure points.

Returning results to your GP
Making sure the specialist's correspondence reaches your usual doctor. This is what allows your GP to keep coordinating everything else.
03Before referral
What Your GP Needs Before Writing a Referral
A referral is only as useful as the information attached to it, so the consultation beforehand covers more than the presenting problem. Your GP will review your full history, current medications, previous investigations and any correspondence from other clinicians. They'll identify which investigations should be completed before the specialist appointment rather than after it, because arriving without them frequently means a second visit. Bringing previous imaging reports, pathology results and any earlier specialist letters is genuinely useful here, particularly where they were arranged through a different practice. Your GP will then discuss which specialist or service is appropriate, whether an internal or external referral makes more sense, and what to expect in terms of timing. Referral decisions remain a matter of clinical judgement and your own preference.

Yes. A referral is a clinical recommendation and the choice of practitioner remains with the patient, including where an equivalent service exists within the same centre.
Specialists often need particular imaging or pathology available at the time of consultation in order to reach a conclusion. Arranging them beforehand generally avoids an additional appointment.
